My landlord sent me notice a few months ago that my rent would go up more than 300 dollars this coming April. And my apartment is rent stabilized. I know that they know very well that they can benefit from getting me out before April. They can make more money off of the apartment the second I get out of it.

So I had to move. I was behind in rent. Reality bites. You lose a job but you still have to pay bills. Income stops and expenses pile up. They raise prices on everything, and when we are working they still don't raise the minimum wage and, well, things don't balance. But they don't care, the people that actually have the power to change the laws that dictate these things. Our salary paid, expenses covered politicians don't know what its like to live paycheck to paycheck so how can we expect them to understand how hard it is to make ends meed in the real world.

So yeah, I moved. I have a new apartment with some new friends and I love it. But am I safe? Maybe...but not if the rent laws expire. If the rent laws expire then millions of New Yorkers will be in housing court like I was. I might find myself there again, with everyone that lives around me in these buildings.

Come to think of it, the last day I went to court (I did fight them for a while) i went at 4:30, a half an hour before they closed the door to the Orders to Show Cause room I was the 132 person. If you haven't been there, an Order to Show Cause is when the marshall puts a notice on your door that says you will be evicted in six days. You take the notice to court and tell them you need more time and try to demonstrate how you will be able to pay. If you have been there...let's never go there again, deal.

Just think about that, on January 27th there were 132 people, plus those who came after me, were begging to stay in their homes.
One day, one boro...132 people...
What happens if the rent laws expire? The problem will be drastically worse.

We can't let this happen. We have to work together. Millions of us will lose our homes.

Hi. My name is Nilsa. I am a mother of 2, a community activist and a life long Bronx resident. I support the Urban Rebuilding Initiative because for too long I personally have had to struggle with the consequences of a neglected community. Our voices and our needs are always overlooked in favor of the wealthy and well connected. We are left to survive with limited or no resources and noone to hold accountable. Its not a coinsidence that the worst schools and the worst tentements and the worst of everything is in the poor communities. We are left a people feeling helpless and trapped.

I have also seen the power that people have when they come together. Things can change for the better if we all stand up for our rights. We all deserve to be able to acquire a good education, a job that pays a living wage, safe, affordable housing and a government that is accountable to our communtites and the issues we need addressed. Nothing will change until we all get together and enpower ourselves.

On June 15th, the Rent Laws in NYC will expire. Its also not a coinsidence that noone is really talking about this. If these laws are not only renewed, but strengthened millions of people including me will be pushed out of our homes. Please support the Urban Rebuilding Initiative so we can work together to make sure our tenent rights are protected, our schools are well funded, and our community is safe and prosperous.

God Bless you.

I think its so crazy that our front page news is always about how charlie sheen is a crackhead or that lindsay lohan is in jail again and this is the shit that people care about. then if you turn to page 35 youll see a 2 sentence article about how our rent laws are going to expire...and meanwhile this will affect millions of people if they do. we, as a community, need to stop engaging in the bullshit and work together to rebuild and strengthen our community. i feel our community is neglected and forgotten and underestimated but if we all organize to get our needs addressed, we can accomplish great things.

My husband lost his job and we are behind rent. The government has a hold on section 8, why? Because of the economy we will have more homeless families. Stop cutting programs that is helping the families. Come on politions get it together. America is the riches country, so why we have so many families suffering? Stop going into outher countries and put the money into your own country.

I am a single mom of two beautiful children. I work 30 hours a week and go to college full-time. Last week, I lost my Work Advantage voucher, not because I failed to cooperate; however, it was HRA, The City and State not holding up their end of their bargain. As of April 1st, over 15,000 families will be homeless. It is time to rise above it and fight for what we deserve because no one is a better advocate for us but ourselves. For anyone that may come across this please bear this in mind: This affects INJUSTICE everyone. EVERYONE! The taxpayer’s money is spending $400 a day for a family to live in a shelter!

In Solidarity,
Jocelyn R.

I am deeply concerned with the THOUSANDS of families that are being forced out of their homes because the State revoked the Advantage Program. All those people thinking their lives had finally made a change for the better and now they are back to square one. Now people in shelters are basically trapped because there are no programs available to help get homeless families into housing. How can our "representatives" allow this to happen? And on June 15th, if our rent laws expire what will happen when that THOUSANDS turns into MILLIONS with no homes and no options? We need to fight for our basic rights to have affordable housing in our community. We have to put enough public pressure on them so they can no longer ignore our community and our needs!! Please organize and get involved everyone! Thank You.
