Gov. Cuomo urged regular New Yorkers to call on their local legislators to act quickly.ALBANY - Gov. Cuomo is warning that the expiration of New York's rent regulations "would be a crisis for our state."
"What we need to do is extend and strengthen our rent regulation laws, and we need to do it now," Cuomo said in a Web video released Tuesday.
Cuomo, the former housing secretary under President Bill Clinton, urged regular New Yorkers to call on their local legislators to act quickly.
The rent laws regulating more than 1 million apartments, mostly in New York City, expire June 15.
Democrats are pushing to extend and expand the regulations by raising the cutoff for deregulation to $3,000 a month, up from the current $2,000.
The Senate GOP majority, backed by hefty campaign donations from landlords and the real estate industry, opposes any expansion.
